Hyde's Victorian and Edwardian mill-worker terraces around the centre and up towards Newton carry natural slate roofs that are well over a century old. The original iron nails corrode, a fault roofers call nail sickness, so the slate slips out course by course even while the slate itself is still sound, and the lime-bedded ridges work loose in the wind.
